I always carry "that basket of items" and its full. However, living in the boonies and being retired we tend to make only one trip into town for supplies per month. We have a Subaru Outback which doesn't get you much space when you start adding a propane or gas cans ect. We are thinking of getting a rooftop carrier for things like that basket and other items taking up space, after all if you take the basket out for a trip into town what good does that do, might as well not have it. Planning on getting a rooftop carrier or small, enclosed trailer pull behind. Keeping the groceries inside for temperature control is the most important. Another idea we also use is to order some dry type items online which gets shipped (only when we order enough to get free shipping) which usually works well. We also can buy a topper for the truck, put the groceries in back seat that need to be more temp controlled and other stuff under topper. Truck uses a lot more gas so try to use it less on trips like this.
